When I was asked to write an article for the newsletter around the Demers Group’s web presence, I had no idea what to write about. Now, four weeks later, I still have no idea. This topic is so large and can be overwhelming even to those of us who have spent years making a living building and maintaining websites. The industry grows, changes and evolves at the speed of thought – not just one’s thoughts, but the thoughts of every person who is connected to the Internet.

WHAT IS THE INTERNET?

I have spent the better part of my life since the late 90’s designing, developing, implementing and maintaining software solutions. These solutions started out as ‘standalone’ applications (programs, you would install on your computer). In 2002 I moved to the more scalable environment of Web-Applications (programs that run on the internet) and have been there ever since. I can tell you that as a developer, about 10% – 20% of a developer’s time is spent keeping abreast of new technologies and innovations. That’s about 1 day out of every five. The percentage is this high because the world keeps evolving.

Today we use the internet as an information resource. We use it for shopping, we use it to connect with each other, we use it to explore many, if not all, of the various aspects of our world. The older you are in age, the more dramatic the potential impact the jnternet may have had on your life. When I grew up in the 70’s and 80’s, talking to relatives in England or Europe was saved for special occasions like Christmas day. We would spend hours trying to get a line as everyone else had the same idea. Now at least 3 times a week, I continue a conversation with a relative in Germany, talk with a former teacher who now lives in New Zealand, and have a Men’s Group Meeting (with up to 10 participants) using Google Hangouts. For those who remember the ‘conference call’, imagine getting up to 10 lines and what the bill would cost. With the internet, I watch TV and movies, buy music and books and easily connect with hundreds of people a day.

We have this incredibly powerful platform with increasingly powerful tools to use with it – tools like websites, social networking, social media, project/group management, video conferencing, and a list that could take the remainder of the week to come up with. What’s more, all of this technology makes it very easy and efficient to do all sorts of jobs, tasks and accomplish so many productively valuable things. It can be a limitless toolbox of possibilities.

HOW DO I MAKE THE BEST USE OF THE INTERNET?

Right now I can hear you saying, ” That’s great. What do I do with it?”

I ask, “Who are you for your clients?” Knowing who you are for your clients is the most important piece of the puzzle. Once you know who you are the “what to do” easily emerges. The doing needs to be in line with your being. One of the biggest pitfalls of technology is that it is great at giving the illusion of productivity. If you are unclear of who you are for your clients, then you will quickly find that you are doing dozens of things which consume lots of time, work and effort that you don’t really care about; although you are doing them really fast and effectively. The technology is only truly effective if it stems from who you are. It would be like purchasing a mechanic’s shop and tools when you have no intention of ever working on or with cars.

KNOWING WHO YOU ARE AND WHO YOU WANT TO BE DICTATES YOUR ACTIONS.

As a Web-Solutions developer, I believe my main objective is to design, develop and create solutions that work for the client. When people come to me, I always ask questions intended to bring them back to “who they are” so that the technology works in concert with their vision.

For example, who are you being for your clients? If you were being that person for your clients what would that person do? What tools are available that could make the process easier, more effective, and align with who you are?

Being in alignment with who you are is the only way I know to be successful with the application of technology.
